Le Serre di Rapolano’s magic comes from ancient times, when it was the source of valuable travertine through its quarries most of them now no longer being used. Medieval buildings of great architectural and historical value remain intact, in particular, the museum which is now open to visitors.
The hamlet was build around a byzantine fortress build during the greek-gotic era between 535 and 553, while the castle, along with other works of military engineering, controlled the access routes to the town. In its history, it was a Lombard settlement and later the residence of the Imperial lords. In the mid-sixteenth century this area was hit by the war between Florence and Siena and the Count of Santa Fiora, an ally of the Florentines, destroyed the imposing tower of the walls after which the town remained as an independent settlement until 1776.
The many houses built on the western side of the alley are all built onto the original castle wall, which already in the fourteenth century was no longer visible. The Via Val di Piazza which leads to the Piazza of Sant'Andrea takes its name from the old church of Sant’Andrea, lately demolished, leaving an ample square in its old location.
