Colle di Val D’Elsa means Hill of the Elsa Valley. According to archaeological remnants Colle di Val D’Elsa dates as far back as the 4th millennium BC, but the first documents that actually mention Colle di Val D’Elsa are dated from the dark middle ages in the 10th century. As the ages progressed and Colle di Val D’Elsa gained strength and political autonomy, it frequently saw military events amongst which the famous battle of 1269 between the Guelfs and Ghibellines which influenced Tuscany’s political & geographical scenary. Just like so many other medieval towns in Tuscany.

During the 16th century, the town formed part of the Florentine political sphere of influence, but thanks to the de Medici family and to the local ruling families who handled the town's administration it became an independent stronghold just after the formation of the grand duchy of Tuscany in 1592, whereby a bill passed by Clemente VIII created Colle Val d'Elsa as the seat of a new diocese.

The town developed along the Elsa river, which gives name to the valley, from the 11th century onwards, building an artificial canal to power various industrial activities, such as wheat mills and paper factories. Towards the 17th century, glass production was introduced by the Usimbardi family and together with the iron industry they replaced the paper industry.

The production of glass evolved into lead-glass crystal production and to this day became its principal industrial activity, so much so that Colle di Val D’Elsa produces 15% of the world’s crystal glassware and art, further becoming in the 20th century and important industrial pole.
